Frequently Asked Questions About Assorted Bird Seed

What is the best bird seed?

Did you know that different birds have their own food preferences? Therefore, the best bird seed is the kind that birds in your area will actually eat. So before you purchase bird seed, you need to do a little research first. You can see what birds native to your area prefer, or, if there is a specific species you would like to attract, research its diet and tailor your bird seed accordingly. While it is easy to buy a premade mix, consider creating your own. Many bird seed mixes you find on the market contain fillers that aren't as appealing to birds. Making your own ensures that you have a high-quality mix that will make your backyard a destination for beautiful birds.

What are the best seeds for wild bird feeders?

Again, the answer to this question really depends on where you live and the birds you are trying to attract. However, we recommend trying a few different types of seeds in a few feeders and seeing what does best. In general, there are a few seeds that most birds just love. Sunflower seeds, safflower, white proso millet, thistle, peanuts (shelled is better), suet, corn and some dried fruit are all great options for a wild bird feeder. Our Wild Bird Ideal Mix is created using all these quality and proven bird attractors.

One thing to consider is that you want to feed wild birds food that they already eat. Introducing food that is processed or not part of a bird's diet is not recommended.

What should you not feed wild birds?

As previously mentioned, do not give birds processed food or anything outside of their diet. This can make them sick. There are some seeds and fillers you should avoid simply because they do not do a good job of attracting birds. Those seeds/fillers include milo, canary seed, oats, wheat, grains, rice, flax, buckwheat, golden millet and red millet.

Do birds like black oil sunflower seeds?

If we could give the most popular bird seed award to one seed, it would go to sunflower seeds! Sunflower seeds are loved by many different types of birds, and because they are often budget friendly, our customers love them too. There are a few types of sunflower seeds, but the best one for attracting the most birds has to be black oil sunflower seeds. Black oil sunflower seeds have a high oil content, making them quite tasty to birds, and their thin shells make them easy to crack open. Cardinals to woodpeckers to finches and doves — it's difficult to find a bird that doesn't love black oil sunflower seeds. This is a must-have in your bird seed mix!
