As a general rule, wildflower seed should be planted at the rate of 4 pounds per acre (1 pound per 10,000 square feet).  On slopes or places where there is high winds, you should increase the rate by 50-100%.  A heavier rate may be desired on smaller areas where the planting will be viewed at close range, or you intend to pick the flowers a great deal.

Clear all existing vegetation and rake the soil to form grooves for good seed to soil contact.  It is advised to make a 1:4 mixture of seed to Vermiculite or Milorganite to "bulk it up" making it easier to spread.  After seeding, rake over the seed, taking care not to cover the seed more than 1/4".  Generally, late fall or early spring is the best time to plant.  After seeding , make sure the area gets enough moisture either through natural rainfall or manual watering.  After the annuals have gone to seed and the perennials have become dormant, an annual mowing to a height of 4" to 6" is recommended.
