Eggplant Growing Season

While each species of eggplant may differ slightly in time to maturity and growing conditions, generally speaking, the following tips apply to all eggplant varieties.

Eggplants are a summer vegetable that only grow in warm soil (50F or above) and should be planted in the late spring after the last frost. Eggplants grow best in sandy loam soil with a higher organic matter content and a pH between 5.8 and 6.6. They should be planted in an area that gets at least six hours of natural sunlight a day. It’s also a good idea to stake the plant or use a cage to keep the eggplant off the ground as it grows. While there might be some variation between species, eggplants typically are ready to harvest between July and October and should be harvested while the vegetable is young for maximum flavor.
