Cowpea Growing Season

While each cowpea variety may differ slightly in time to maturity and growing conditions, the following generally applies to all cowpea varieties.

Cowpeas are a warm-weather vegetable and should be planted in the late spring, two weeks after the last frost. Cowpeas grow best when planted in areas that get an average of six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day. Cowpeas should be planted with the eye facing downward, 1 to 2 inches deep, with each seed spaced 4 to 6 inches in rows spaced 24 inches apart. Cowpeas do best in soil with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

On average, it takes 80 days for cowpeas to reach maturity, and you will know that the peas are ready to harvest when the plant has a 10” spread and is 16” to 18” tall. Your peas are ready to harvest when the pods are 6” to 8” and feel full.
