While most people enjoy installing bird houses in their gardens or back yards, some people also like to put up insect houses. These little houses provide the perfect shelter for various insects including honey bees and lady bugs. If you decide you would like to place an insect house in your yard, be sure to put it somewhere sunny, yet sheltered from the elements. In addition, hanging it from a tree is ideal, since most bugs live in or near trees to begin with. Most insect houses look almost identical to bird houses, except that most of them have much smaller entrance holes and may be smaller overall. You can also purchases butterfly houses as well. Attract bugs to your insect house by buying some ladybug or other insect food, and placing it inside the house. This specially formulated food will bring the insects in, and often keeps them there so that you can observe and enjoy them.
You can purchase most insect houses from lawn and garden stores, or online. Be sure you buy a quality insect house made of proper materials. Look for untreated and unpainted wood. Any kind of wood that has been treated or painted can be harmful and even deadly to the insects you are trying to attract, so look out for this when purchasing your insect house. Once you’ve gotten the house, either hang it from a sturdy tree, or attach it securely to a fence or the side of your home. Once the spring weather starts, you can see the activity begin to flourish. Not only will many insects begin to gather, but you may notice more birds and other animals arriving to your yard, since they feed on the insects as well. Insect houses are a wonderful way to educate children and learn about the habits of the smaller creatures around us.
