How to Grow Zinnia Flowers

Zinnia flowers are a gorgeous choice for any garden.  The flower comes in a wide variety of different colors, and it has large, profound blooms that really give a garden a sense of cheer.  There are even varieties of zinnia that are giant and can be up to three feet in height!  Most of the time, the zinnia flower is grown from the seed.  However, the best way to ensure that the flower grows healthy is to begin its life inside in pots or containers, and then transplant it outside later once the zinnia seedling has grown and become healthy.  Once the zinnia has developed seedlings, move it outside and cover the roots lightly with soil.  Be sure the garden will not be affected by frost to avoid planting them too early.  If you have the regular type of zinnia, they should be space about four to six inches apart, and if you’ve opted to plant the giant version, it’s recommended that they are separated about one foot apart from each other.

Zinnia flowers like rich soil that is somewhat moist, but not too wet.  They do enjoy a good composting or a good fertilizer.  The richer the soil, the more healthy, colorful, and full the blooms will be.  The zinnia flower is an annual, and once it begins to form frost outside, you will notice the plants beginning to wilt.  Once a hard frost or freeze comes, the zinnia flower will die off.  The plants look their best in mid-summer, and should last throughout the season.  Fortunately, the zinnia plant is fairly resistant to insects and pests. Zinnia flowers make beautiful indoor arrangements.  Cut some and place them in bunches for a fabulous centerpiece, or trim some and put them in a vase for a lovely decorative accent.  Add some baby’s breath and make a lovely, colorful bouquet.
