Growing Watermelon in your Vegetable Garden
Watermelon is a popular summer treat, and produces a wonderful sweet fruit that everyone enjoys. If you’d like to grow watermelon in your vegetable garden, keep in mind that this plant thoroughly prefers hot to warm and humid climates. It does not thrive well in mild to cool weather. Watermelon loves full sun and needs good circulation in order to grow properly. Choose a site that will be able to provide the plant with as much sunlight as possible, for as long as possible throughout the day, and one that will avoid chilly winds, as watermelon does not adapt well to this either. When you are ready to plant, dig some organic matter into the soil and make sure that it is slightly sandy and very well-drained. It’s recommended that you buy watermelon seeds to plant versus purchasing seedlings at a nursery, because watermelon don’t do very well when they are transplanted.
Your plant should be placed in a hole that is about two feet around and one foot deep. Watermelon plants need to be planted at least 3 feet apart, and can sometimes be planted up to 12
whole feet apart! This will depend on the type of watermelon you purchase, because different varieties grow to be different sizes. When you’re ready to plant, add some more fertilizer right before panting them, even if you had already previously placed organic matter there. Many people opt to add a plastic cover to their watermelon patch with slits cut in it to allow the plant to grow. This will serve several purposes, including keeping heat inside and preventing pests from attacking the roots of the watermelon. Young watermelon seeds need about an inch of water per week. Once flowers begin to show, any plastic coverings should then be removed, because bees will begin to come and pollinate them. When the watermelon plant has come to full bloom, wait about 35-40 days from that point, and you’re ready to harvest and enjoy!
Main Street Seed and Supply offers many different types of watermelon seeds including Sugar Baby, Black Diamond, Crimson Sweet, Charleston Gray and Triple Crown seedless watermelon seeds.
