Growing Pumpkins in your Vegetable Garden

Pumpkins are considered by many to be mystical, magical plants.  We all love them during the fall months, and they make delicious pies and other desserts, and are a great deal of fun to carve and decorate the porch with during Halloween season as.  Pumpkin seeds also make a great healthy treat. Growing pumpkins in your vegetable garden is fairly simple, as long as you know just what they require.  You should purchase pumpkin seedlings at your local nursery, although they can be grown directly from seed as well.  It’s recommended to plant them as seedlings because their roots will already be established.  The patch where you choose to grow your pumpkins should be tilled, and should be done so as deep as possible.  The roots and vines that grow from pumpkins can get to be as long as 15 feet, so make sure you have plenty of room before planting.  A backyard is ideal.  Pumpkins like full sun, and prefer a nice, rich soil fertilized with a manure and compost combination.

Pumpkins seeds like to be watered every week with about one to two inches of water.  They also like to have extra nourishment, so add in some compost tea or even seaweed extract to give your plants an extra boost.  Check for weeds frequently.  You’ll know your pumpkins are ready to harvest when the thick vines have finally shriveled and appear to be dead.  In the meantime, pinch the vines back slightly to ensure good growth of the fruit.  There are many different types of pumpkins, from the “Jack be little” variety which only grows to be about 4 inches wide, to the gigantic 200 pound “Atlantic Giant.”  If pie is what’s on your mind, look for the mid-sized and very sweet “New England Pie” varieties.  No matter which kind of pumpkin you choose, they are a fun plant to grow and even more fun to harvest and enjoy.
