How to Grow Perennial Flowers
The term perennial in relation to flowers and plants means that they come back to flower for more than just one season like their annual counterparts. If you decide you’d like to grow perennial flowers, it’s important to find varieties that will grow best in your particular region. You should purchase them in seedling form, and try to find some that are grown in four inch to twelve inch containers. Look for perennials with green growth and little to no signs of wilting. Next, check the flowers’ light requirements, as each type of perennial needs varying amounts of sunlight. Full sun means give the plant at least six, and preferably eight hours of full sunlight. Partial sunlight means the flower can stand some shade and doesn’t need as much direct sun. If the plant needs partial shade, this means it should receive about three hours of sunlight per day, no more if possible.
Most perennial flowers enjoy a really rich soil, so treat them with compost or another form of robust, organic fertilizer. Make sure you apply no more than three inches’ worth of compost or fertilizer to the top of the soil. Perennials prefer somewhat moist soil, so be sure to check your plant’s water levels, and water them at least weekly unless there has been a sufficient amount of rainfall. Another important tip when growing perennial flowers is to always trim back any dead leaves or buds. This encourages the plant to grow fuller, more vibrant blooms the next season. Do some research and find out how far apart your perennials need to be based on which variety you’ve purchased. This is very important as you don’t want the plants to become “choked” or overgrown. Follow these tips and you’ll have beautiful flowers that should last for many seasons.
