Growing Nasturtium Flowers

You may or may not be familiar with the word nasturtium.  Perhaps you are, however, familiar with the Scottish flamethrower or the Indian cress.  These are just a few of the nicknames given to the nasturtium flower.  The nasturtium flower grows very rapidly and easily.  They are annual plants, and give a wide range of bright greenery and vibrant flowers.  It’s best to plant nasturtium from seedlings instead of from seeds.  Check with your local nurseries to find out which varieties are available, and mix and match them if you desire.  Be sure you know which types are which, as some are mainly used for groundcover, while others are climbing vines.  The leaves of the nasturtium can range from deep greens to an almost creamlike color.  The flowers usually appear in dark reds, yellows, and golden colors.  Once you’ve chosen your seedlings, plant them in loose soil that is well drained but that also keeps moisture fairly well.  The nasturtium does not like tightly packed soil or clay.

The seedlings should be planted outside, about one foot apart from each other and about a quarter of an inch deep in the ground.  A misfortunate affliction of the nasturtium is aphids, which are small green insects that attack many different plants.  Be sure to check your flowers thoroughly and often for these intruders.  You can purchase something called an insecticidal soap which will kill off the pests as well as remain friendly for both the earth and your precious plants.  The nasturtium love full sun, but also don’t mind a little bit of partial shade from time to time.  It’s a little known fact that the petals of the nasturtium flower are actually edible!  Look into some unique and challenging recipes that include this flower and you’ll not only have a beautiful addition to your garden, but perhaps a new food as well!
