Growing Moonflower
The moonflower is a beautiful and almost magical flower. It takes on the form of a crawling vine, with lots of gorgeous, large, white flowers that emit a sickly sweet and lovely scent. The flowers usually bloom late in the afternoon, and even more at night, thus giving them the name moonflower. This is an annual plant, so growing it properly is extremely important because you don’t want to miss out on its beauty. Make sure that you plant your moonflower in very rich, well-drained soil. The plant also likes to be in full sun, so try and plant it somewhere that receives a good amount of sunlight. It’s important to plant the moonflower seeds when the weather is completely warm and there is no more danger of frost. In most regions, this is typically around the middle toward the end of May, maybe even into the beginning of June.
Before planting your moonflowers, you should soak the seeds in water for at least 8 hours. Then you can plant them about one inch deep into the soil. Most people enjoy watching moonflowers twine around a trellis or up the side of a home, so once the plant begins to grow a few inches, it’s time to wrap it around something gently and encourage it to grow like a vine. The plant grows fairly rapidly, and can get up to anywhere from 12 to 20 feet in length! Be sure to mulch the moonflower’s soil regularly and pick back any dying flowers or leaves so that new and healthy growth is encouraged. The moonflower is a real treasure to be enjoyed by gardeners of all types who love to watch the miracle of nature take place. An idea is to plant your moonflower next to the morning glory, which blooms in the mornings, so that you will constantly have lovely flowers in your garden to gaze upon and enjoy.
