Growing Marigold Flowers

Marigold flowers are a beautiful yellow flower that adds cheer and brightness to any garden.  Many gardeners claim that marigold flowers are among some of the easiest flowers to grow, and are fairly simple to start from the seed.  The plants need full sun, so be sure to choose a spot in your garden where they will receive the highest amount of sun possible each day.  Sow the seeds directly in the ground, and cover them with about ¼ inch of soil.  Overall the seedlings should be placed anywhere from 8 to up to 18 inches apart.  I really depends on the variety of marigold that you’ve chosen, so you may want to consult your local nursery or do some research to find out which conditions suit the type of marigold you’ve chosen best.  Once the flowers begin to grow, you should fertilize them every four to six weeks or so.  Fertilization will promote healthy strong and full growth.  A healthy marigold flower will have plenty of leaves, and all of them will be a nice green color with no browning or dead leaves attached.

While most marigold flowers are a bright golden yellow, there are other varieties that come in colors like crimson.  Weeds do like to prey on marigolds, so be sure you trim your plants often, and you may want to treat their environment with some non-harmful weed killer and diligent pruning.  If you see a bloom that has died or is wilting, pinch it off at the bud to promote new growth.  While the plant is known as easy to grow and fairly hardy, don’t let this fool you into ignoring them and not tending to their needs.  They must remain adequately watered, or else some pests such as whitefly or spider mites will try to inhabit the plants.  With a little TLC, your marigolds should grow beautifully and healthy and add a touch of happiness to your garden.
