Growing Daisy Flowers

Daisies are a lovely and delicate flower that reminds many of us of spring days and relaxed afternoons, or Easter time.  Daisies are perennials that make wonderful vase flowers, terrific indoor arrangements, lovely potted plants, or gorgeous additions to the garden.  There are lots of varieties of daisies, but the two most popular forms are the Shasta daisy and the African daisy.  While the Shasta is a perennial, the African daisy is an annual.  All daisies are considered to be some of the easiest plants to grow, so they’re perfect for beginning gardeners or children.  Most daisies are grown directly from their seeds.  You can plant them directly into the soil or flowerbed.  You can also opt to grow inside by planting daisy seeds in trays.  When first planting your daisies, the seeds can be scattered together in clumps, but as time goes on and they begin to grow, they will need to be separated to avoid “choking” each other or overcrowding the garden.

Daisies love the sun, so try and make sure they are planted in an area where they can get full sun for as long as possible each day.  Like most plants, their soil should be rich with nutrients and well drained.  When the plants are first planted, it’s a good idea to use some fertilizer to encourage healthy growth.  Once the plants become established, you can also add some fertilizer that is high in phosphorous to their soil.  This encourages the daisies’ blooms to be full and healthy.  Fortunately, daisies are not often prone to many diseases or pests.  They do not typically need any kind of pesticide or fungicide, which is another reason they are very easy to grow and maintain.  Once the daisies have fully bloomed, trim them to make a lovely bouquet or table arrangement.  Daisies bring joy and happiness into any garden!
