Growing Cucumbers in your Vegetable Garden

Cucumber is a gentle, light, and cool vegetable that’s wonderful in salads.  They are also the source of pickles.  Cucumbers are also used as an eye compress because its vitamins produce properties to reduce swelling.  Cucumbers seeds prefer warmer weather and can grow rather rapidly.  Although they are narrow, they do require a good amount of space when growing them in the garden.  The best way to grow cucumbers is to plant the seeds directly in the garden.  Warm soil is an absolute must.  Cucumbers like moist soil but are able to withstand hot summer weather.  The seeds should be planted one half to one full inch deep, and about one foot apart from each plant.  At the beginning stages, adequate moisture is a must.  Cucumbers require thorough watering particularly in their germination stages so be sure to water them on a regular basis.

The cucumber plant prefers rich soil, so add compost before planting, and then supplement with a fertilizer and mulch as the plant matures.  Cucumber beetles are a common pest, so be sure to pay attention to this and take any steps necessary for prevention at the first sighting.  Cucumbers will grow in a vine-like fashion, so feel free to plant them near a trellis for a beautiful background.  Like tomatoes, some people prefer to use wire cages to support the plants.  This is especially necessary in areas where there may be heavy winds.  It is a little known fact that cucumbers are actually eaten when the plant is still immature.  You will know they are ready for harvest when the skin transforms from a light to a darker green, and before seeds have become hard.  The fruit is a rapidly growing plant, so they should be harvested fairly quickly, picking them once every other day or so.
