Growing Cantaloupe in your Vegetable Garden

Cantaloupe is a wildly popular breakfast and dessert melon that is a cousin of the watermelon.  The cantaloupe is delicious served plain and eaten with a spoon, or cut up in a fruit salad.  Cantaloupe is sweet and has a wonderful light peach color when cut open.  Growing cantaloupe in your vegetable garden can be a fun and rewarding experience.  When planting this lovely melon, be sure you have plenty of room in the area where you’ve chosen to harvest them.  Most cantaloupe varieties should be planted about four to six feet apart.  Depending on how much room you have will really determine how many plants you want to grow.  Even if you only have space for a few cantaloupes, it’s a great addition to your garden.  Most melons like warm temperatures, so it’s best to plant your cantaloup seeds and grow your cantaloupe in warm climates or seasons.  They like moderately moist soil, but pay special attention to weeds.  Small rodents also love cantaloupes, so be on the lookout for these pests as well.

While cantaloupe does enjoy warmer weather, if they are not ripe in time for the first frost, just be sure to cover the patch with plastic sheeting at night to keep the frost away and keep the plants above freezing.  Cantaloupe can take up to 75 days in some cases, so remember that patience is key and that it will be well worth the wait!  You can usually tell as a general rule that melons are ripe when their stem has dried out.  Check your cantaloupe and pay special attention to the condition of the stem.  Once your cantaloupe has been harvested (some suggest harvesting it about a week early), you can store it in the refrigerator up to a week.  Fresh cantaloupe is a delicious treat and goes great with sherbet, whipped cream, and a variety of other delectable goodies!
