Growing Beets in your Vegetable Garden
Beets are a very versatile and beautiful vegetable. Both the leaves and the stalk can be eaten and provide a great deal of vitamins and nutrients. If you decide you’d like to grow beets in your vegetable garden, there are a few things to keep in mind. First off, beets like the cooler weather. Typically United States zone 8 is ideal for their growth. Beets like very rich soil, so it’s recommended that you have your soil tested to be sure it has the optimum amount of nutrients and the proper PH levels. When planting beets, be sure to plant them at least 1 inch deep. The beet plant requires a lot of depth to ensure strong root development. They should be planted a minimum of 2 inches apart, and at least one foot apart between rows. Once your beets have been planted, it’s best to cover the rows with protective covering because beets attract a lot of pests and insects.
Once the beets have grown to about two inches tall, it’s imperative that you weed them diligently. Beets seeds will not be able to develop properly if they become overcrowded. The beet plants needs to be watered thoroughly at least once a week. Their roots are succeptable to becoming cracked and damaged if they don’t get enough water. Growth can be somewhat rapid if your beets are fed a diluted liquid fertilizer that is fairly low in nitrogen. Feed them approximately every three weeks. This will encourage sweet tasting plants as well. Your beets, both root and foliage, are ready to be harvested once the plant has grown fully but is still somewhat small and tender. Use the greens in fresh garden salads, and the roots for a variety of delicious and versatile dishes.
