Growing Beans in your Vegetable Garden

Beans are a delicious and extremely versatile vegetable.  In gardening lingo, there are commonly three different varieties of beans: dry, shelled, and snap beans.  The basic difference between the three is really just how they grow and what they look like when fully developed.  Otherwise, most beans require the same basic things.  First, beans need full sunlight.  Be sure to plant your beans in an area that has no shade and gets plenty of sun throughout the day.  Make sure the soil temperature is at least 55 degrees before planting, and that there is no danger of any more frost.  Beans seeds like rich soil that is high in potassium, and lower in nitrogen.  You may want to have your soil tested before planting.  Typically, beans should be planted about one inch deep into the soil, and approximately 2-3 inches apart.  It’s highly recommended that poles are also inserted in the soil at the time of planting, so the beans can grow strong and healthy with good support.

Beans do like moist soil, so be sure to give them about one inch of water per week.  You may want to give them slightly more when you see their pods begin to develop.  Although beans like water, be cautious not to water them too much- this can cause more harm to them than if they did not receive enough.  When your beans begin to develop a second set of leaves, apply some mulching to their soil bed.  Feed them with some fertilizer as well to be sure that they grow large.  Although the three basic types of beans seeds grow in the same basic conditions, there are differences when it comes to harvesting time.  For snap beans, harvest when they are fairly young, and before you see the beans in the pod begin to swell.  For shell beans, be sure to harvest them before the shells turn brown.  Dry beans should stay on their plant until the pods are dry.
