Growing Baby’s Breath

Baby’s breath is an unusual flower that produces tiny, delicate white flowers.  Many people often use baby’s breath as ornamental filler for bouquets to give them a pretty touch.  Baby’s breath are annuals, and they are very tender.  They grow fairly fast and are simple to grow.  The plant can grow to be as high as two feet in some cases!  Some babys breath can produce pink flowers, but most of them are white.  The plants like warm temperatures, and it is not recommended that you plant them before the spring months when the evenings are fairly warm.  When growing baby’s breath, keep in mind that they prefer full to partial sun and rich soil.  They will not grow well or healthy in clay or sand-like soil, but tend to do much better in alkaline soil, so you may wan to have your soil tested for PH levels beforehand.  In addition, baby’s breath likes moisture and will not thrive in dry conditions.  Be sure that your baby’s breath is watered on a regular basis, and pay special attention to them when the weather is dry.

When planting baby’s breath, try to space them about 8 inches or so apart.  The plants don’t mind slight crowding.  Adding a fertilizer is a good idea too, since the plant does much better in rich soil.  The flowers should germinate from a range of about ten to fifteen days.  Once this happens, they grow rather quickly.  Fortunately baby’s breath is not as susceptible to pests or disease as many other plants are, but it’s still a good idea to watch for any intruders such as harmful insects.  Once the flowers have bloomed, trim them to make gorgeous corsages, add them to vases and bouquets or flower baskets to make a lovely accent for any decoration or presentation.
