Growing Aster Flowers

Aster flowers are usually grown best when planted and sown directly from the seed instead of transplanting seedlings.  To begin growing aster flowers, first get and keep the seeds damp, usually this can be achieved by simply spreading them between two wet paper towels, and making sure they stay moist during germination.  Germination of the aster flower usually happens within about 10 days.  Once the seeds are germinated, it’s time to plant them.  To begin with, place them in the soil about three inches apart.  Later when the seeds produce seedlings (typically when they have grown four leaves or so), it will be best to transplant them again and move them about one foot apart from each other.  If you do not want to plant the flowers outside first, they can be sewn indoors and then moved to your outdoor garden later.

Typically, aster flowers come into full bloom around the middle of May.  Pay special attention to their growth habits, as sometimes asters can grow rather tall and gawky.  Frequent trimmings are necessary to keep the flowers from overgrowing and looking unattractive.  Aster flowers make wonderful cutting flowers.  It is suggested that you cut them just as the buds begin to open, and place them in a vase.  There are many different types of aster flower.  Some of the most common species are the spider aster, dwarf aster, powder puff, and single, double, and semi-double kinds.  Each of these is named as such because of the amount of petals they produce and their height.  Dwarves are much smaller and do not grow as tall.  Powder puffs grow into a beautiful ball shaped cluster of flowers.  Spider asters produce thinner petals, thus giving them their name.  No matter which type of aster flower you choose, they make a beautiful addition to any gardens.
